New Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is an eye disease that slowly robs people of their vision, often without them even knowing it. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Treatment to stop the progression of glaucoma includes drops for mild cases or surgery when the disease is more advanced. But now doctors at Mayo Clinic are using another, less-invasive procedure to stop glaucoma and save vision.

Does Medicare cover this new surgery? And, is it only done at the Mayo Clinic?

  2. Michael Mathews says:

Can you give details on how this differs from a goniotomy? ( a procedure that is hardly new). thank you.

  3. Moshe Avrhami says:

How does Dr. Shetty’s new surgery differ from the standard one?

Your question has been referred to ophthalmology for a reply.

The surgical procedure that Dr Shetty is referring to is done with a trabectome.
A trabectome opens the eye’s drainage system from the inside rather than “standard” filtering surgery that opens the drain to the outside.
It is felt that this may reduce the chance of unwanted side effects.

  4. Nirav chudgar says:

Does this work in someone who has damage to the trabecular mesh work due to fire cracker injury in past leading to angle closure glaucoma?

    • Thank you for writing, Your question has been sent on.

    • This surgery is unlikely to work in an individual with glaucoma due to injury. An injury severe enough to cause glaucoma typically causes damage to the other drainage structures of the eye. This type of surgery depends on a normal drainage pathway, other than the trabecular meshwork, which is removed.
      Sincerely,
      Arthur J. Sit, SM, MD
